The recipient of the 2022 RNA Society / Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press Distinguished Research Mentor Award is Dr. Susan Gerbi of Brown University. In addition to being a highly successful mentor of her own trainees, Dr. Gerbi has spearheaded mentoring initiatives broadly within her institution, in scientific organizations (such as the American Society for Cell Biology and the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology), and in our own society - including establishing the Mentor/Mentee Lunch that is now a fixture of the RNA Society Annual Meeting. Her efforts at FASEB led to introduction of Individual Development Plans (IDPs) as a means to assist trainees in long-range planning of their scientific careers - now employed widely by institutions inside and outside the USA. Dr. Gerbi also served on panels for the U.S. National Academy of Sciences for the establishment of the NIH Pathway to Independence program that provide transitional funding for Postdoctoral Fellows seeking independent positions in academia. For these and many other contributions to advancing the mentoring and training of future scientists, the RNA Society is pleased to present Dr. Gerbi on this well-deserved recognition.
