The RNA Society/Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press Award for Research Excellence by an Underrepresented Scientist recognizes exceptional contributions to RNA science by a graduate student or post-doctoral fellow trainee who is underrepresented in biomedical research. The 2023 award goes to Dr. Sezen Meydan, who obtained her PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago based on studies in the laboratory of Drs. Alexander Mankin and Nora Vazquez-Laslop showing how ribosomal frameshifting and internal translation initiation offers a mechanism to diversify the proteome in E. coli. Dr. Meydan is currently a member of the laboratory of Dr. Nicholas Guydosh at the National Institutes of Health, where she studies mechanistic aspects of eukaryotic translation regulation mechanisms and ribosome stalling and collisions, and their consequences on cellular homeostasis.
